NEXUS Interviews: Land Border and Airport Options Explained

A NEXUS application involves both Canada and the United States. Before choosing an interview location, understand how you will complete both countries’ requirements. Booking the most convenient first appointment is only helpful if you can finish the full process.

What is NEXUS?

NEXUS supports expedited processing for approved, low-risk travelers between Canada and the United States. Start with the official CBSA NEXUS guide and apply through the Trusted Traveler Programs website. Review eligibility before paying or planning an interview trip.

The adult application fee is US$120. CBSA’s published fee report lists that amount for 2026–27. Check the current application instructions for exemptions and the terms that apply to your application.

Three interview routes

The CBSA interview guide describes these options:

  • Joint land interview: select a participating U.S. land enrollment center through the TTP scheduler to meet with Canadian and U.S. officers.
  • Split land interview: complete portions on opposite sides of the border at participating paired centers. The second portion is automatically scheduled for the same date.
  • Two-step airport interview: complete the Canadian portion at a participating Canadian airport enrollment center and the U.S. portion through an eligible airport process.

For the airport route, the U.S. portion can take place at Canadian preclearance before a U.S.-bound flight or at a participating U.S. airport on arrival. CBSA says no appointment is needed for that U.S. portion. Check access requirements and service hours; starting the airport process means you cannot finish it at a land center.

Build a plan for the complete interview

Before committing to a route, write down where each portion happens, whether it depends on an international flight and how much travel is involved. For a family, CBSA requires a separate appointment time for each person.

For example, a traveler with an upcoming eligible flight may find the airport route practical. Someone without that travel planned should compare the land options before purchasing a flight just for enrollment. This is a planning consideration, not a promise that one route will be faster.

Does a Global Entry appointment complete NEXUS?

Do not assume any appointment labeled Global Entry will satisfy your NEXUS requirements. Follow the NEXUS route shown in your official account and the CBSA instructions linked above.

Understand the role of a private alert service

Appointment Hopper currently advertises Global Entry appointment alerts. This NEXUS guide does not establish that NEXUS monitoring is available. If you need help checking service coverage, contact Appointment Hopper before purchasing. Government applications and interview bookings remain with the official agencies.
